Storytelling is what turns an image into an experience — in this immersive presentation, attendees will see firsthand how powerful visual narrative can be.

This presentation features a curated collection of approximately 30 original artworks, shown in a cinematic, movie-style format. Rather than viewing images in isolation, attendees experience selected recorded image sequences — strategically excerpted to fit the 90-minute format — that demonstrate how layered visuals can evoke emotion, create tension, and guide the viewer through a story.

By engaging the audience through strong visual stimulation, this presentation helps attendees retain what they see, understand why it works, and apply those principles to their own creative process.

What Attendees Will Learn & Why It Matters

    • Visual Storytelling Through Sequenced Artwork
See how individual images connect to form a larger narrative that captures attention and keeps viewers emotionally engaged.
    • Why Visual Stimulation Improves Learning & Retention
Understand how storytelling through imagery helps your audience remember your work—and your message.
    • Advanced Photoshop Story-Building Techniques
Learn how landscapes, architecture, elements, and subjects are composited to support a story rather than distract from it.
    • Creating Epic Scenes with Purpose
Discover how to design scenes that feel intentional, immersive, and believable—so every element serves the narrative.
    • Translating Inspiration Into Your Own Work
Walk away with a clearer framework for telling your own stories, not just creating visually impressive images.

    • Why This Presentation Resonates

    • Cinematic, immersive experience—not a slideshow
    • Story-first approach to compositing and digital artistry
    • Inspiration paired with practical insight
    • Designed to spark new creative direction

    Who This Presentation Is For

This presentation is ideal for photographers and digital artists who want to:

    • Move beyond single “wow” images and create deeper meaning
    • Strengthen emotional connection in their work
    • Elevate compositing with intention and narrative
    • Develop a clearer artistic voice

By the end of this presentation, attendees won’t just see powerful storytelling — they’ll understand how to build it, shape it, and apply it to their own creative journey.

Cognitive Portraiture: Designing Images the Brain Can’t Ignore

With Kelly and Kalina Kelly Schneider

      A LUMEN SYSTEM Educational Experience

      6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

      LOCATION: Holiday Inn
      2224 Auburn Blvd
      Sacramento, CA 95821

      Course Summary

This 90-minute educational presentation explores the psychology and science behind visual attention, emotional connection, and intentional portrait design, teaching photographers how to create portraits that instantly capture attention, guide the viewer’s eye, and leave a lasting emotional impression.

Through the LUMEN SYSTEM and Three Pillars framework, students learn how the human brain processes imagery and how intentional decisions in lighting, tonal hierarchy, composition, contrast, and emotional weighting influence viewer behavior and strengthen visual storytelling.

      What Students Will Learn

      • Understand how the brain prioritizes visual information so they can create portraits that immediately capture and hold viewer attention.
      • Learn how to intentionally align Point of Interest (POI), focal point, and exposure anchor to create stronger emotional connection and visual clarity.
      • Use light, color, gesture, contrast, and composition strategically to guide the viewer’s eye and control attention flow throughout the portrait.
      • Recognize how tonal hierarchy, brightness distribution, and dynamic range influence emotional response so images feel more intentional and impactful.
      • Develop stronger storytelling skills by building portraits backward from emotional goals to create more memorable and emotionally resonant imagery.
      • Strengthen technical consistency through improved understanding of exposure anchoring, subject separation, contrast management, and controlled lighting strategies.
      • Increase originality and creative confidence by understanding why certain visual choices trigger stronger psychological and emotional engagement.

      Topics Covered

      • The psychology of visual attention
      • How the brain scans imagery
      • Saliency versus distraction
      • Eye tracking and gaze behavior
      • Exposure anchoring and tonal control
      • Composition and cognitive balance
      • Negative space psychology
      • Emotional movement within portraits
      • Color contrast and subject isolation
      • Designing “brain-sticky” portraits with intent

      Ideal Audience

Designed for portrait photographers, wedding photographers, fine art photographers, creative visual storytellers, educators, and intermediate to advanced creators who want greater emotional, psychological, and visual control in their imagery.

      Student Takeaway

Students leave with a practical understanding of how viewers emotionally and visually experience portraits, giving them the tools to intentionally design images that create stronger connection, clearer storytelling, and greater visual impact.

      • Advanced Creative Portraiture Workshop

        A Two-Day Immersive Educational Experience

        Workshop Overview

This intensive two-day workshop is designed to help photographers move beyond simply taking technically correct portraits and begin intentionally creating emotionally compelling, visually powerful imagery with confidence and consistency.

Through a combination of structured classroom education, guided hands-on shooting sessions, real-time critique, and cognitive visual analysis, students learn how to strengthen both the artistic and technical sides of portrait creation while developing a repeatable creative process they can apply long after the workshop ends.

Built around proven adult-learning methodologies and performance-based instruction, this workshop combines creative exploration with practical execution to accelerate growth in storytelling, lighting, composition, emotional communication, and visual design.

        What Students Will Learn

        • Learn how to develop creative ideas, emotional goals, and visual narratives intentionally so portraits communicate with greater clarity, depth, and emotional impact.
        • Understand how technical confidence directly influences creativity, allowing photographers to make stronger artistic decisions under real shooting conditions.
        • Master the Three Pillars of Light, Exposure, and Composition to create portraits with stronger visual hierarchy, subject separation, and viewer engagement.
        • Apply exposure anchoring, light flow control, color harmony, and negative space intentionally to guide viewer attention and create more polished, cinematic imagery.
        • Gain practical experience by rotating through photographer, art director, assistant, and lighting support roles to better understand the full creative workflow behind successful portrait sessions.
        • Improve problem-solving and shooting confidence through immediate instructor feedback, guided correction, and real-world shooting challenges.
        • Learn advanced emotional storytelling techniques using movement, gesture, environmental integration, and cinematic portrait construction to create more emotionally resonant portraits.
        • Understand tonal distribution, controlled contrast, chiaroscuro lighting, and shadow management to create greater dimensionality, mood, and emotional weight within an image.
        • Develop stronger visual communication skills by analyzing saliency, viewer attention flow, and emotional impact during live image evaluations and group critiques.
        • Strengthen creative adaptability by completing intentional portrait challenges with assigned emotional objectives and controlled creative constraints.
        • Build long-term creative growth systems through portfolio development strategies, visual identity refinement, and repeatable creative workflows.

        Educational Philosophy

Unlike traditional “watch me shoot” workshops, this experience is intentionally structured around proven instructional systems designed to create measurable growth, practical application, and repeatable creative execution.

Using frameworks such as the ADDIE instructional model and the
Knowledge → Skill → Ability (KSA) progression system, students move beyond inspiration alone and develop deeper understanding, stronger technical retention, improved decision-making, and greater creative confidence.

        This structured learning approach combines:

        • intentional creativity
        • guided repetition
        • real-time correction
        • cognitive understanding
        • and practical application

So, students leave with not only stronger portraits, but also repeatable systems for sustained artistic and professional growth.

        Ideal Audience

Designed for portrait photographers, wedding photographers, creative visual storytellers, and intermediate to advanced creators seeking stronger emotional storytelling, technical mastery, and intentional visual communication in their work.

In 2025, Gress helped lead Team USA to victory in the World Photographic Cup, earning Best in the Nation for the highest-scoring U.S. image, and was also honored at the United Nations with a Professional Photographer Achievement Award from the International Photographic Council.

Gress discovered photography as a teenager in Oregon when he brought his mother’s Vivitar camera to summer camp. By his senior year of high school he was already covering major events for the Associated Press. Today he combines technical mastery with a deep understanding of branding and storytelling to create powerful visual content for clients around the world. A passionate educator and mentor, Gress shares his expertise through Instagram, YouTube, industry publications, conferences, and hands-on workshops across the United States, helping photographers strengthen both their technical skills and creative vision while advancing the craft of photography.
