On Location Landscape Photography: From Field Vision to Finished Voice

Califorina landscape does not need another photograph. It needs your voice.
This immersive one-day PPA/EDU experience blends on-location field instruction, guided refinement, and visual critique to help photographic artists move beyond scenic documentation into intentional, competition-ready artistry.
Participants will spend much of the day working in the landscape—learning how to slow down, observe, and compose with purpose. Dennis will demonstrate how to read light, identify visual flow, manage energy within the frame, and interpret location beyond the obvious.
The guided discussion portion of the workshop bridges capture to completion. Attendees will explore:
- Translating field emotion into visual design
- Understanding impact vs. spectacle
- Seeing beyond icons and predictable compositions
- Practical refinement techniques for print competition standards
- Applying the PPA 12 Elements of a Merit Image in landscape work
- Self-critique frameworks that elevate intention and integrity
The day also includes guided group critiques designed to strengthen visual literacy, articulate artistic intent, and develop a disciplined creative voice.
This program is not about chasing dramatic skies or postcard perfection.
It is about learning to see deeply, compose deliberately, and create images that resonate beyond location.

Dennis Hammon did not come to photography to collect titles.
He came to understand light.
What began as fascination slowly became devotion — long hours before sunrise, standing in silence, waiting not for spectacle but for something honest. Over time, the camera became less of a tool and more of a teacher. The land taught patience. Weather taught humility. Failure taught sincerity.
Dennis holds the degrees of Master of Photography and Photographic Craftsman and is a Fellow of the American Society of Photographers (F-ASP). Yet those distinctions represent something deeper than achievement. They mark decades of disciplined growth, study, competition, critique, and service to the profession he loves.
His work explores the full emotional range of landscape photography — from grand and sublime vistas to quiet, intimate abstracts that ask the viewer to slow down. He believes a photograph should not overwhelm the viewer but invite them. Not perform — but resonate.
As a speaker and educator, Dennis shares not formulas, but awareness. He teaches visual literacy, artistic integrity, energy containment, and the courage to develop a personal voice. He challenges artists to move beyond imitation and into meaning — to create images that endure because they are sincere.
